Power unit
As already mentioned, the drive axles were not coupled to each other. Each driving wheelset had a steam engine mounted on one side outside the wheel plane with two double-acting cylinders in a V-shape arranged at 90°. In order to distribute the mass evenly, the engines were arranged on the left-hand side of driving wheelsets 1 and 3 and on the right-hand side of driving wheelsets 2 and 4. The motors belonged to the sprung part of the vehicle and drove the driving wheelsets via Siemens-Pawelka articulated couplings to compensate for the movements between the driving wheelset and the sprung locomotive parts.
The crosshead-guided connecting rods of the pistons drove the drive gear set shafts via the aforementioned articulated couplings via a crankshaft mounted in the engine housing. Steam was fed to the cylinders via ordinary internal-flow piston slides controlled by a variable eccentric.
The steam engines were oil-tight encapsulated, the lubrication of the steam engines in these was effected by a gear pump, of the piston and slide valve running surfaces going under steam by a Bosch pump and in all other respects (engine and control) by centrifugal lubrication. All bearings in the engines were roller bearings, with the exception of the driving rod bearings on the crosshead pins. The crosshead bolts of engine B were fitted with needle bearings on an experimental basis.
